Background
Recent happenings in United States like Katrina and 9/11
have contributed to driving of various business cases of NHIN across the country.
Even Presidential mandates/views on this topic have boosted the research, design
and implementation of NHIN networks and security applications of PHR and EHR.
Additionally, HIPAA standards regulate the security level for transfer of the
PHR (Patient Health Record) across systems.
Not a lot of people know this, but there are thousands of lives lost at
American hospitals due to medical errors in diagnosis, partly because of
medication allergies, incorrect diagnosis. A NHIN network will ensure that
medical errors leading to fatal deaths are reduced drastically, and in a few
years from now, deaths due to reasons mentioned above, could be a thing of past.
Present Scenario
NHIN will provide enhanced patient care treatment for consumers all over the nation,
by securing real-time exchange of Patient Health Record information, and using interoperable
systems implemented at various hospitals, providers and health-centers across the nation.
This system will reduce inpatient death rate due to medical errors by 50%.
Small and medium sized private firms, academic and non-profit organizations have taken the lead
for laying out a base architectural framework for this huge national effort. Till date, there
have been no standards defined by Federal or State/Local governments or organizations. DHHS has
awarded companies like IBM, Accenture, Northrop Grumman and CSC to develop a prototype, which
along with the open source architectural framework will provide the architectural framework
backbone.
It may be noted that both existing and new technological innovations in the world of information
security and information technology transfer are being considered, and evaluated for providing an
interoperable and scalable architectural framework.
